Basics for the kids...

Hey all. Got our first opportunity to go camping this weekend, and we implemented a plan with our daughter that we hadn't really thought of before and wanted to pass it on to you. It's a great idea and worked very well.

My wife had purchased a book bag for our daughter that came with it's own tent and whistle. The whistle was great. On the whistle there was a compass, a magnifying glass, and a flint striker. The whole assembly was kinda cheaply made, and next time I'm gonna get her a 'nice one' like in the picture below. But what was amazing was the whistle itself. I tied a loop in it with some para-cord to hang around her neck. Keep reading below to learn how to put it to good use.

If your kids are like ours, they will want to go "exploring" around the site and see what they can find. Now most times we would go with, but being older and just wanting to sit by the fire and enjoy each others company, there are times when she will be off by herself. When this happens there is an awesome way to keep in touch.

By using this whistle we developed a way to know where she's at at all times and allow her to relay to us if she get's in trouble. We taught the following to her and it worked flawlessly.

1. When she's off and we want to know where she's at we would give a quick "yelp" or some other kind of "animal" call, and she responds with 2 whistles.


2. If she gets lost, she gives 3 bursts on the whistle and we call back.


3. If she finds something interesting that we might want to know about, or see (like a bigfoot throwing rocks at her, ha ha) she gives 4 blasts.


4. And finally if she is really in trouble she gives 5 or more blasts and we go running to find her and make sure everything is ok.

Like I said, this system worked great, and you can use it to. Change it to fit your needs and sit back and feel the relief knowing your always a whistle away from your adventurous child.
